If you're starting a Salesforce Admin journey, the sheer number of topics can feel overwhelming. This roadmap breaks it into a clear, ordered sequence — the same structure we use in live training.
Stage 1: Platform Fundamentals
Start with the big picture before diving into features:
- What Salesforce is and how CRM concepts map to platform features
- Navigating Setup, the App Launcher, and Lightning Experience
- Salesforce editions and licensing basics (enough to be conversational, not exhaustive)
Stage 2: Data Model & Relationships
This is the foundation everything else sits on:
- Standard objects (Account, Contact, Opportunity, Case) vs. custom objects
- Fields and data types
- Lookup relationships vs. master-detail relationships
- Schema Builder for visualizing your data model
Practice tip: Build a custom object structure for a fictional business (e.g., a training institute, a real estate agency) — don't just read about relationships, create them.
Stage 3: Security Model
The most commonly under-practiced Admin skill — and the one interviewers probe hardest:
- Organization-wide defaults (OWD)
- Role hierarchy
- Sharing rules
- Profiles vs. permission sets vs. permission set groups
- Field-level security
Stage 4: Automation
- Flow Builder — Screen Flows, Record-Triggered Flows, Scheduled Flows (this has replaced Workflow Rules and Process Builder as the standard automation tool)
- Validation rules
- Approval processes (multi-step, with email alerts and field updates)
Stage 5: Data Management
- Data Import Wizard vs. Data Loader (when to use which)
- Duplicate and matching rules
- Data quality practices — this matters more in real jobs than most beginners expect
Stage 6: Reports & Dashboards
- Report types and formats (tabular, summary, matrix, joined)
- Building dashboard components
- Scheduling and sharing dashboards with stakeholders
Stage 7: Sales & Service Cloud Essentials
- Lead and opportunity management (Sales Cloud)
- Case management basics (Service Cloud)
- The Service Console
Stage 8: Deployment & AppExchange Basics
- Sandbox vs. production environments
- Change sets (the Admin-level deployment tool)
- Installing and configuring AppExchange packages
Stage 9: Certification Prep
Once the above is solid, shift into focused Salesforce Administrator exam prep — practice questions, timed mock exams, and reviewing weak areas.
Stage 10: Projects, Resume & Interviews
- Build 1-2 substantial project pieces you can walk an interviewer through
- Prepare a Salesforce-specific resume that highlights configuration work, not generic descriptions
- Practice scenario-based interview questions ("How would you design sharing rules for X?")
How Long This Actually Takes
Self-study alone often stalls around Stage 3-4, because security model and automation are genuinely easier to learn with a live instructor and real feedback on your configuration choices.
